154: Strength Training for Runners with Vinnie Tortorich

Vinnie Tortorich, author of Fitness Confidential, and a fellow podcaster shares convincingly (even though I don’t want to), why runners should strength train. He gives examples of what happens to the body physically and cosmetically. We discuss how runners evolve and how he would train as a first-time marathoner. You’ll hear that he is a big fan of Zone 2 training.

You’ll also hear Vinnie discuss why you might not  want to exercise the way you did in high school, the radical shoulder surgery that he had a year and a half ago that requires physical training (PT) four times a day, and why he is a big fan of Chi Running. Vinnie asks me about what running looks like for me today, and how it is radically different than what I did a year ago with running three marathons in six weeks.

We have a really raw conversation, share how things are different now, and discuss how to look back on physical achievements—even if you’re currently in a physical state that would not allow you to accomplish what you have accomplished before. It wouldn’t be an episode with Vinnie without him getting upset about something. You’ll hear Vinnie “vent” (VV) about how contestants were treated on the Biggest Loser Ranch, which was filmed very close to where he used to live.

Our Runner of the Week is American Sarah Ryan, who has called London home for the past fifteen years. Sarah shares some of her running journeys in the 89 countries she has visited, including Germany and Holland. She also shares why she was so excited to see churches built out of stone in Ethiopia and her experience of travelling at elevation and then going to sea level to run a marathon in Meddoc, France. Sarah also talks about her experience at the London Marathon. Side note: Sarah and I were able to meet up at a Wharton event in Philadelphia in September 2016. Coming to Philly/Wilmington, DE? Click here to let me know when and maybe we can set up a TRLS meetup.

Serena Marie, RD, talks all about oils—and specifically about coconut oil. Coconut oil is a saturated fat rather than a polyunsaturated fat (it's not omega-6 or omega-3) and contains medium chain fatty acids (MCTs) that may improve insulin sensitivity. Coconut oil is heat stable. The US government recommends to limit trans-fatty acids (which are a very unhealthy type of dietary fat) by avoiding foods that have partially hydrogenated oils in them. Serena also explains how people might be eating partially hydrogenated oils without even realizing it.

I was the race announcer at the Inaugural Run Inspired 10K held at Winterthur in Winterthur, DE. It was a beautiful course on a picture-perfect, crisp fall Delaware morning. Over 1,500 runners ran the 10K, which was directed by David McGillivray, Race Director of the Boston Marathon and DMSE. Dave was on Episode 67 and shared what a race director wants a runner to know. Nik Toochek, the youngest person to run seven marathons on seven continents, inspired his grandpa, Dick Sanford, to create the Run Inspired 10K. Nick and his father Dan appeared on the podcast to share their stories about running around the world on Episode 32.

Are you running the Marine Corps Marathon or the Marine Corps Marathon 10K? If so, we’re going to have a meetup on Saturday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. EST at Zatyinya, which is just a few blocks away from the Convention Center. Click HERE to RSVP. There will be a special raffle, and of course, plenty of running talk.
