159: When Is It Too Much?
Have you ever wondered if you’re bordering on the fine line between running often and running too much? Do you feel as though you might be running away (most likely) from something? That’s what’s discussed on today’s episode with nine-time Ironman, Jt Clough. She shares her over-training journey. Jt and I have a very raw conversation about why we’ve both overdone running and how to get back on track to look at running as fuel for your body.
Jt specifically talks about how you can learn more about yourself through your interaction with your dog (assuming you have a dog of course!), how to avoid going from extreme to none, how to exercise so that you can be in the flow, and who the person is that she would love to meet. Hint, hint—this woman has been talked about on the podcast many times, and we share a deep gratitude to this woman.
Jt has also updated her book, 5K Training Guide: Running with Dogs, which can be found HERE. Looking to run with your dog? This could be a book for you.
We have a “re-run” of a conversation that Serena Marie, RD, and I had back on Episode 65 (April 2015) around the importance of iron in a runner’s diet. When possible, Serena recommends eating meat such as liver, dark meat, seafood, turkey, and chicken. When it comes to vegetarians, great sources of iron include lentils, apricots, legumes, dark leafy greens, and tea. When eating non-heme sources of iron (anything that hasn’t lived), it’s recommended to consume something acidic so that the iron is optimally absorbed.
