165: Running Around the World with Dean Karnazes
Our friend, also known as Cousin Dean, is back on the show. Dean Karnazes runs by to discuss his fourth book, The Road to Sparta: Reliving the Ancient Battle and Epic Run That Inspired the World’s Greatest Footrace, and he debunks one of the biggest myths about the marathon distance. We also discuss Dean’s new favorite state to run in (this is according to me, not him), the status on his goal of running a marathon in every country in the world in one year (and what or who might get in his way), the foods he probably never wants to eat again thanks to running the Spartathlon, whether or not he is a clairvoyant, and his recommendations for someone who is looking for a job or career in the running industry.
Did you know that avid runners have a 41 percent decrease in heart disease? You don’t need to be a runner like Dean Karnazes to incur the health benefits of being a runner. Health IQ, a new sponsor of The Running Lifestyle Show, has negotiated better life insurance rates with over 50 life insurance companies. Not only can you potentially save money on life insurance through Health IQ by being a runner, but also you can take fun quizzes to increase your running knowledge. Head over HERE to find out more.
As runners, we’re putting a lot of oxidative stress on our bodies while we run. Because of that, our go-to, real-food dietitian, Serena Marie, RD, explains why it’s so crucial for us to use food as fuel. Some of the foods that Serena encourages runners to eat are as follows:
Palm-sized source of protein at most meals to heal your muscles that incur damage
Organic meat, eggs, and butter
Avocado, nuts, and seeds
Non-processed grains
An abundance of non-starchy vegetables
She specifically reminds women that in order to avoid exercise-associated amenorrhea (in simple terms, not getting your period due to over exercising), it’s crucial that women eat enough fat.
Oftentimes people come to the sport of long-distance running in an effort to lose weight. One of the best ways to lose fat (particularly from the midsection, which is problematic for many runners) is to focus on high-intensity cardio. Both Serena and I are huge fans of kettlebell workouts and interval training.
It’s that time of year when we all make resolutions and goals. One of the best ways to achieve your goal is to be a part of a group. Research shows that many people learn best from each other. Here at The Running Lifestyle Show, we would like to offer you a special Coaching and Accountability Goals group exclusively for listeners only. The group will include four weeks of a weekly online meeting with me (Kari), plus members will be paired up with accountability partners. The price is $100, and the group is capped at ten participants total. E-mail me at Kari@TheRunningLifestyle.com for more information or to sign up!
