221: How to Learn to Be Lucky

Science shows that people are highly impacted by what they see, even if they don’t realize it. We can dislike someone subconsciously just because they remind us of someone we don’t like. This observation and research about how humans are wired can be really disheartening; however, there are a lot of things we can do to learn how to be lucky whether in running, our professional lives, or our personal lives.

Karla Starr is an investigative reporter who has appeared on CBS News and has had her work published in O (The Oprah Magazine) and the New York Times—to name a few. She has just released her first book titled, Can You Learn to Be Lucky? Why Some People Seem to Win More Than Others. Karla’s book is also our October Book of the Month.

We discuss the following:

  • Why to spend time doing things that make you feel confident

  • How Karla “studied her way” out of depression and took action

  • Why winning is important

  • How she took research about power posing “to the subway” and what happened when she struck a pose

  • What mental resourcefulness is and how to apply it

  • Why you should keep an open mind

  • Why changing your habits can change your mind

  • How applying pressure to inflamed areas can help you relax

  • Why not to tie your self-worth to an outcome

Serena Marie, RD, discusses the following during her nutrition segment:

  • A keto diet can be therapeutic for treating epilepsy or seizure disorders. It is a great short-term (less than 6 months) solution for fat loss.

  • It is not a great long-term lifestyle, since it negatively impacts thyroid hormones and metabolism.

  • Remember athletes need carbohydrates to enhance performance, build muscle, and boost metabolism.
