171: The Gift of Running and the Running Community

Oh how we love the gift of running and the running community! This episode is all about “girl power” and how the gift of running fuels confidence and forms friendships. My new friend, Lisah Hamilton from The Conscious Runner podcast, runs by and discusses the following:

  1. What a conscious runner is and how she (or he) prevents injuries as a conscious runner

  2. The toughest job in the world times 1,000

  3. How being a competitive swimmer has helped her running and make friends

  4. How she gets herself to run when she doesn’t feel like it

  5. As a running coach, what she wants runners to do and keep in mind when it comes to running form and mindset

The greatest thing about my conversation with Lisah is how running has evolved during her life and how she prioritizes it.

Side note: I was on Lisa’s podcast to talk about the type of mileage I’m doing (she was surprised), my favorite gear, and lessons I have learned on the run. We are meeting up in a few weeks, and who knows, maybe we’ll record a conversation on the run.

Rain Wang is our Runner of the Week, and wow, does she have a story for us! She went from living with her parents in Beijing to attending a boarding school in Scotland where she made friends by joining the cross country team. She later moved to Canada with her parents, and in college, she decided to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant to increase her self-confidence. One day she was in the lab as a physicist, and the next she was on stage in a bikini! From there, she has founded a company called Skelmet that creates custom-made sunglasses and biking helmets.

We briefly spoke about the amazing things that artificial intelligence (AI) creates these days. The conversation about AI and running was so interesting that Rain is coming back next week so that we can dive deeper into what AI products can help us do as runners. It’s fascinating stuff!

Our go-to real-food dietitian, Serena Marie, RD, gives us the scoop on why some people gain weight when they are stressed and how some lose weight. Then, we chat about the fact that many runners who take on the marathon distance gain weight as their cortisol gets out of whack, plus they may not be as mindful of what they are putting into their bodies since they “earned it” through a tough training schedule.
