238: Is Motivation Garbage?

This time of year involves reflection and celebration. The beauty in it is that there is a general sense of looking back on the year to see the positive and the not so positive, along with the prospect of a crisp, new calendar to look toward the future.

The good news though is that you don’t have to wait until the new year to get your mojo going. You can do it anytime by being grounded in the Self-Determination Theory.

On today’s short run episode, I share the following:

  • The structure of motivation and what you can do when you’re not feeling it

  • Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan’s research from 1985 and 2000 that states that motivation guides behavior that has consequences for psychological well-being and self-regulation

  • That the Self-Determination Theory is made up of autonomy, competence, and relatedness

  • The stages of autonomy and what stages lead to intrinsic motivation

  • The three magic questions to ask yourself when doing something

The Runner of the Week, Julie Marienau from Episode 200, shares the following:

  • Her experience at the Rehoboth Seashore Half Marathon and the course highlights

  • What is special about running at Walt Disney World

  • The funniest sign she saw in Rehoboth

  • What’s with Ryan Gosling and signs at marathons?! (inquiring minds WANT. TO. KNOW!)

  • How cold weather can put a Floridian in flow
