This is the first part of a two-part interview about depression, being a mom, and running. Dimity McDowell, one half of Another Mother Runner, discussed in her latest book, Tales from Another Mother Runner, her challenges with depression. We have an extremely raw conversation about the depression and what helps and what doesn’t.

  • How Another Mother Runner (AMR) Came About

  • What AMR offers its community

  • When she realized she had postpartum depression

  • What worked for her with post postpartum depression and what didn’t

  • What she believes about depression now after 10 years

  • What side effects neither one of us wanted with medication

  • The tough winters of Wisconsin and Minnesota

  • The verb Dimity uses to describe herself

  • The gift of sitting still

  • She’s done the big things

  • Settle in to the feelings that are there

  • Happiness is not a 365 days a year “thing”

  • If she doesn’t accept it then she is a dog chasing her tail

  • What lead to one of her darkest moments

  • What is one of the toughest places in the world for depression (we both agree!)

  • The book to help with depression

Our Runner of the Week is Liz Miele, who is hysterical. In fact, she was so funny that she has been named “The Running Lifestyle Show’s Official Comedian”. Liz’s running stories are too funny and very relatable. In fact, after we stopped recording I asked Liz if some of the things were jokes and she said no. She’s that much fun.

My fingers are crossed that Liz will be performing the night of June 13, 2015 in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Serena Marie, RD, and we hope a lot of women friends of the show will run the NYRR Ladies 10K around Central Park (insert link). The evening of June 13th, we’re planning on going out and have a good time in Manhattan. Care to join us?

Our Go To Real Food Dietitian, Serena Marie, RD, shares what to do when you are running to the bathroom while on vacation. I NEVER get sick going to Mexico, but this time I did. :-( Serena talks about what to do while you are sick in regards to food and how to recover with food and probiotics.

I discussed my experience at the Cherry Blossom 10 miler, which was really a 9.39 mile run due to an accident that happened an hour earlier. The race was fun and I was able to run and catch up with my friend Sarah Boschung from episodes 15, 43, and 60. I was also able to spend some time with Beth from BANDIwear and meet fans of BANDI’s belts and headbands. The highlight was asking Joan Benoit Sameulson what she was thinking when she won the Women’s Marathon in 1984 Olympics.
